About the Hill Country Makers

Founded in April 2016 as Blanco Makerspace, we merged with the Tye Preston Memorial Library 3D Printing Club in the summer of 2019, and began holding our meetings at the library. Our meeting schedule is included on the library's calendar. While the library was closed during the pandemic shutdown, we met online.

MakerSpaces are an outgrowth of the DIY (Do It Yourself) movement where like minded individuals create a space and community for learning and doing it together.

To join the Hill Country Makers just come to one of our meetings. It's free!

We also offer some email lists. Follow the page link to find out more.

This is the description of our group that appears on the Tye Preston Memorial Library website:

Do you like to tinker? Consider yourself a Do-It-Yourselfer? Are you curious about new technologies like 3D printing, computer aided Design, CNC machining, computer programming, robotics, or about what can you do with the Raspberry Pi or Arduino around the house? Or do you just like to make things? If so, the Hill Country Makers may be the group for you. We are a group of people who like to discuss what we are working on at home and learn from each other. Meetings often include tutorials and demonstrations, and from time to time we offer short courses to the larger community. We are also engaged in building projects together. If any of these topics are of interest, whether you are already involved or curious, please join us. We meet every Monday at 6:00 - 7:45 PM in the Board Room at the Tye Preston Memorial Library.

What We Do

Projects

Fundamental to a maker space is making things. On our Projects page we discuss proposals for things to work on, and stories about things we have made as a group. For individual's projects, see the Show and Tell page. Also check the Projects category page.

3D Printing

The library has a 3D printer, and many of our early members also have printers at home. From time to time we offer classes for beginners, and there is always help available if you have questions. Just come to a meeting and ask!

Things to Make

  • DIY Drone
  • Automatic Plant Watering System
  • 3D Printed Cases

Things We Are Working On

  • Weather Station
This was our first group project. We planned building a weather station for the library, with a Magic Mirror display.

Things We Have Made

Classes

Both for community outreach and to facilitate our own projects we plan to offer classes in a variety of creative techniques. This page of Class Ideas is where we discuss possible class offerings.

In July 2023, we will offer a class on Introduction to Microcontrollers for teens, at Tye Preston Memorial Library.

We are also experimenting with taking MOOC (Massively Online Open Courses) classes together, beginning with Tinkering: circuits from Coursera beginning in January 2020.

Show and Tell

This page is for listing links to pages about individual projects we want to share. These can be tutorials, descriptions of tools or gadgets, or just stories about cool techie things we've done.

Field Trips

Part of a creative life is seeing what other people are doing. We organize Field Trips from time to time to do just that.

Places We Have Been

Meetings

We normally meet weekly (on Monday evenings). During the Coronavirus pandemic shutdowns we have been holding online meetings, but otherwise we get together at the Tye Preston Memorial Library on Monday evenings. In both venues we have shared presentations, show-and-tell. and general discussions. Now we are adding occasional meet-and-greet sessions at various local restaurants in lieu of Zoom meetups as well. If you are local and would like to join us, please email us for details and the current meeting place.
